Common questions
Questions about gates, quotes, automation, trailers and delivery.
Quotes and measuring
Are quotes free?
Yes. Send photos, rough measurements and a few details, and Jules will quote from those for free, wherever you are. In the Horowhenua he will also come out to measure and quote at no cost. If you are further afield and would like a site visit, give Jules a call to talk it through.
What should I send for a quote?
A few photos of the opening or area, rough measurements, and any ideas you have for the style and colour. The more detail the better. You can attach photos on the quote form.
How much does a custom aluminium gate cost?
Every gate is made to order, so the price depends on its size and style, decorative panels, posts, automation and installation. Jules quotes each job so you know the cost up front.
I live outside your area. Can you still help?
Yes. Jules can build to your measurements or drawings and send your gate anywhere in New Zealand, ready for your own installer. If Jules works with one near you, he can put you in touch.
Timing, payment and warranty
How long does a custom gate take?
On average about 3 to 4 weeks from the 50% deposit to installation. It can be as short as 2 weeks, or a little longer, depending on materials, workload, powder coating and the weather. Jules will give you a timeframe with your quote.
Do you need a deposit?
Yes. A 50% deposit gets materials ordered. The balance is due once you are happy with the work, usually within 7 days.
Do you do cash jobs?
No.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. There's a 5-year warranty on workmanship. Materials aren't covered.
Gates and posts
Why choose aluminium over steel or timber?
Aluminium does not rust or rot, and powder coating keeps it looking good with little more than a wash now and then. It is also lighter than steel, which is easier on hinges, wheels and gate motors.
What colours can I choose?
Gates and panels are powder coated, and there are many colours to choose from. Charcoal, black and white are common, and colours can be matched to your joinery or fence.
Can you make a gate to my own design?
Yes. Pick a design from past jobs, bring your own idea, or send a drawing.
Should I choose a sliding gate or a swing gate?
Sliding gates suit short or sloping driveways and places where there is no room for a gate to swing open. Swing gates suit wider, flatter driveways and rural entrances. Jules will talk you through what works best for your site.
Can you build a gate for a sloping driveway?
Yes. Sliding gates can be built to suit sloping driveways. Tell Jules about your driveway when you get in touch.
Can you make a gate to match my fence?
Yes. Send a few photos of your fence and house and Jules can match the style and colour, or make matching fence panels at the same time.
Can I hang new gates on my existing timber posts?
Jules recommends metal posts where the existing ones are old, loose or out of plumb, because timber moves and twists over time. He can supply 100 × 100 mm aluminium or galvanised steel posts, powder coated to match.
Will a slat gate cope with the wind?
Jules recommends a 10 mm gap between slats so the wind can pass through. Louvres also let air through while giving full privacy.
What is Corten?
Corten is a weathering steel that develops a rust-coloured surface layer. It is designed to rust but not rust away, and its warm look stands out against dark aluminium.
Can I use my own photo or design for a panel?
Yes. Jules works with a skilled designer who can convert a photo or image into a file that can be laser cut. Send it through with your quote request.
Automation
Can my gate be automated?
Yes. Jules builds sliding and swing gates ready for automation and works with an experienced gate-automation electrician who fits the opener. He will pass on your details and liaise for you.
Who fits the automation?
Jules builds and installs the gate, and the opener is fitted by an experienced gate-automation electrician he works with.
What if there is no power at the gate?
Solar-powered openers are an option for many gates, especially on rural properties where running power to the gate would be expensive.
Can I still open the gate in a power cut?
Most openers have a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand, and many can have battery backup. Ask about it when you get your quote.
Is a sliding or swing gate better for automation?
Both automate well. Sliding gates suit sloping or short driveways and places without room for a gate to swing. Swing gates suit wide, flat entrances.
Trailers, fabrication and repairs
Can you build a trailer to my own design?
Yes. Tell Jules the size, what you will carry and how you will use it, or send a drawing, and he will quote to build it.
Can you add a cage or rack to my existing trailer?
Often, yes. Cages, A-frames, kayak cradles and H-bars can be made to fit. Send photos and measurements of your trailer.
Do you build boat trailers?
Yes. Aluminium is ideal for boat trailers because it does not rust after launching in salt water.
Can you deliver a trailer or picnic table?
Yes, anywhere in the North Island. Pick-up from Levin is free.
Can you make something from my drawing?
Yes. Jules can make to provided drawings, or work the design out with you from a sketch or photo.
Do you do small one-off jobs?
Yes. Get in touch with what you need and Jules will let you know if he can help.
Do you repair gates you did not make?
Yes. Send a few photos and a description of the problem and Jules will let you know whether it can be repaired.
Is it worth repairing, or should I replace the gate?
If the frame is sound, a repair is usually the cheaper option. If a gate is badly damaged or was poorly built, a new one can be better value over time. Jules will give you an honest opinion.
Can you fix my gate motor?
For motor and electrical faults, Jules can put you in touch with the gate-automation electrician he works with. Jules looks after the gate itself.
Delivery and installers
Can you send gates to the South Island?
Yes. Gates can be built to your measurements or drawings and sent anywhere in New Zealand.
Who installs a gate that has been delivered?
Your own builder, fencer or gate installer. If you do not have one, let Jules know where you are and he can try to connect you with an installer in your region.
What if I get the measurements wrong?
Jules goes over your measurements and photos with you before anything is built. If you are unsure, it is worth having your installer measure up.
Can a delivered gate be automated?
Yes. Gates can be built ready for an opener, to be fitted by a local gate-automation installer.
I am an installer. Can I work with you?
Yes. Fencers, builders, landscapers and gate-automation installers can register as a trade partner.
